Printing in Silo is no different than printing from a local browser, with available Print policies for the Silo Administrator to manage print functionalities for their organization

Requirements

  •     Print policy must be enabled
  •     A connection to a local printer

Managing Silo Print Policy

• Launch the Silo Admin Console, then click Manage right below Policies
Navigate to Data Transfer > Print > Edit

The Print policy allows you to Allow printing from any device, Allow printing from trusted devices (Installed Client only), or Do not allow printing

It is important to understand how data is processed during the print request, along with how the Print policy may coincide with custom File Transfer policies. Silo will render the content as a print file, and seamlessly pass the file over to a temp directory in the background, where it's set for automatic deletion at the end of the browser session

Printing Steps

Web Client

1.  Click the Vertical Ellipsis icon, then select Print

This will render a PDF document in a separate Silo tab, and will give you the ability to adjust print properties, like orientation, paper size, magnification, etc. Once the changes are applied, the print file is created and handed off to the local machine's printer device

        2.  Click Print from the Print dialog window

3. You may need to click Print again if another confirmation window is presented

More Info: The keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + P prevents the Silo Print dialog from appearing

Windows Client Printing

Starting with Silo Windows client version 2.9.12: clicking the Gear icon at the log in window will present a Print selection for either Use Silo or Use Default PDF App

The default option Use Silo leverages a robust, reliable open-source PDF library (PDFium) to view, search, and print PDF files

The following PDF readers are supported if you opt to go with Use Default PDF App:

Adobe Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader

Nuance Power PDF Advanced 1.2.0.5 (or newer)

Sumatra PDF

Best Practice for Zero-Residue (zero-data-on-client)

To maintain a strict zero-residue policy, please ensure that printing is completely disabled via the Print policy. Although print data is automatically deleted at the end of each browser session, there are still potential risks to consider when the Print policy is enabled. It is important to note that having the Print policy enabled could compromise the zero-data-on-client policy — whether through intentional actions, client-side exploits, copy and paste, stored externally, or recovered through forensic methods

A key point to emphasize is that if Print is disabled, but Data Transfer is enabled, end-users can still download the data and print locally, effectively circumventing the established policies and restrictions
