Description

In cases where you would like to install Authentic8 Silo in the Program Files directory, you will need to extract the MSI from the standard installer and run it in a special way. The instructions provided here along with the associated software package will allow for a fully functional multi-user install suitable for enterprise installations.

Assumptions

  • The user doing the install has administrative privileges on the workstations
  • The install will be made into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Authentic8"
  • All references to auto-update are removed from the product. This means that administrators who distribute this software are responsible for upgrading the software.
  • The installation steps described below are for reference only. They are used to illustrate how the install would occur if you were doing this manually. If you are using an automated distribution mechanism, you will need to modify the instructions as appropriate. Please contact Support if you have any questions.
  • Good working knowledge of your software distribution mechanism (like SCCM)

Process Summary

  1. Download the latest Silo .exe Installer
  2. Extract the MSI from the downloaded package
  3. Install the package with a custom installation directory
  4. Create Desktop (or other) shortcuts
  5. SAML SSO Customers
  6. PIN Login Customers
  7. Disable client auto-update feature
  8. Enable Silo protocol handlers

Download the latest Silo .exe Installer

The Authentic8 Silo software can be downloaded at https://www.authentic8.com/get.

Extract the MSI from the downloaded package

After downloading the package, move to a temporary location. Open a command prompt and navigate to the file location. Enter the following command:

authentic8-win-<build number>-release-prod.exe /c /t:"<extract path>"

Note: The extract path can be the same location as the download location.

Install the package with a custom installation directory

You will need to modify the INSTALLDIR parameter to install Silo in the directory of your choice. Run the following command in an elevated command prompt.

msiexec.exe /qb /i "C:\<path>\setup.msi" INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\Authentic8"

Create Desktop (or other) Shortcuts

SAML SSO customers should only follow the SAML SSO Customers procedure. All other customers including Deferred PIN customers should follow the PIN Login Instructions

SAML SSO Customers

For users who leverage the federated authentication offered in Silo, you should create a link to your Silo Access Portal. Please have the Silo Access Portal enabled before proceeding.

Create a shortcut with the following properties
  • Name of the shortcut should be "Authentic8 Silo"
  • URL should be your custom Silo Access Portal
  • Default Icon should point to a8cli.exe which is in the location specified above for the parameter INSTALLDIR during installation

This can be placed in Program Files, the Desktop, or anywhere else you like e.g.
  • %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Authentic8
  • %PUBLIC%\Public Desktop

PIN Login Customers

Customers who choose to authenticate with a PIN should publish a shortcut to the Silo application to their desired locations.  PIN only customers may also use the Silo Access Portal.  Simply follow the instructions above.

Create a shortcut with the following properties
  • Name of the shortcut should be "Authentic8 Silo"
  • File location should be the same location specified above for the parameter INSTALLDIR during installation
  • Default Icon should point to a8cli.exe which is in the location specified above for the parameter INSTALLDIR during installation

This can be placed in Program Files, the Desktop, or anywhere else you like e.g.
  • %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Authentic8
  • %PUBLIC%\Public Desktop

Disable client Auto-Update Feature

The default behavior for the Silo client is to check for updates periodically. This should be disabled in all cases where the INSTALLDIR location is modified from the default. This is because the update process will install the updates in the wrong location.

The following registry entry should be made for every user who logs into workstations with Silo installed. This registry change disables the menu item which gives the user the option to update the product.  The change only needs to be done once per user per workstation:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Authentic8, Inc.\Authentic8]

"a8UpdateControl"="none"

Enable Silo Protocol Handlers

Silo supports the use of various custom handlers. When using a distributed install, they need to be installed separately to instruct the locally installed browser how to use the handlers.

Download this regfile and install with Silo
Note: You will need to replace the <UserID> with the logged in user's ID.
