Background

Customers have observed increased difficulties downloading video content that is hosted on third party web sites.

Authentic8 provides access to the Video DownloadHelper browser extension within Toolbox as a tool for analysts to download video content from various web resources.

Video DownloadHelper is a widely-deployed extension for this purpose, and as implemented on our platform, supports downloading a range of common video formats, including MP4, WEBM and AVI. Some websites separate the audio and video content into independent files, which must then be processed and reconstituted into a single video. Converting these separate streams to downloadable formats requires purpose-built, dedicated post-processing infrastructure, and we have not supported this reconstitution capability due to its negative impact on the user’s browsing experience.

Investigation into the sites that stopped working indicates that they have switched their streaming technologies and now separate out audio and video channels. The adverse performance effects of running such post-processing on our browser infrastructure imply the need for alternative video collection methods.
